Architecture of the house
A building of new beginnings
The Catholic Academy Hamburg was built in 1973 in the style of modern post-war architecture. Its building stood for an intellectual and structural awakening in a changing society - deliberately open, geometrically clear and striking in terms of urban planning.
Architectural signature
Architects Walter Bunsmann and Paul Gerhard Scharf shaped the building with its hexagonal basic structure. This hexagonal motif runs through the supporting pillars, floor tiles, ceiling elements and room geometries - a design fingerprint of the 1970s.
Ensemble with history
The building is located directly next to the church of St. Ansgar, also known as the "Little Michel". The two buildings form an important ensemble of Catholic presence in Hamburg's city center and complement each other both architecturally and spiritually.
Renovation with a sure instinct
The building was carefully renovated in 2013-2014. As a listed building, the foyer was opened up, visual links to the church were established, a light-flooded inner courtyard was created and modern event rooms were integrated - without losing any of its character.
Today's use
Today, the building serves as a conference and meeting venue - and houses a stylish guest house , the Hotel Michaelis Hof. The architecture creates a framework for dialog, contemplation and openness - in keeping with the spirit of the academy.
